Kloovenburg is one of the oldest registered wine estates in the Swartland, with viticultural roots dating back to the 1700s. Owned by the du Toit family since 1956, the estate is now led by Pieter du Toit and his family, continuing a long tradition of family farming and winemaking. Since Duncan Stuart took over winemaking in 2021, the wines have moved towards a fresher, more modern style, bringing new energy and precision to the estate.
Tim Atkin MW awarded Kloovenburg Village Red his Best Value Wine of the Year, highlighting the exceptional quality and drinkability of this Swartland favourite.
Tim Atkin MW – 91 Points
“Wonderfully drinkable stuff from the talented Duncan Stuart, this is an eminently drinkable blend of Grenache, 32% Syrah, 14% Garnacha Peluda and 5% Mourvèdre that’s bottled with a screwcap for easy access. Juicy, tangy and lightly wooded, it’s a Cape Côtes du Rhône, with bramble, strawberry and white pepper flavours and textured tannins. 2025–30.”
The estate focuses on Mediterranean and Rhône varieties well suited to Swartland’s warm climate and schist- and granite-rich soils. The Village Range, named after nearby Riebeek Kasteel, is designed to be approachable and expressive — capturing the character of the Swartland in an easy-drinking, everyday style.
Food and Wine Pairing: Pairs well with leaner meats dishes like lamb, venison and turkey. Poached salmon, braised duck breast or savoury vegetarian dishes.
