Tasting Notes: The wine is predominantly Merlot (80%) & Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) with support in a classic red Bordeaux blend. Lovely soft bramble fruit flavours with vanilla notes from time spent ageing in oak barrels.
The Estate: In the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers in the Bordeaux wine-producing region, near Creon, the vineyards of Chateau Haut-Pougnan spread on the slopes of the right bank of the Garonne, with superb clay-limestone soil and gravel.
That is the nature of calcareous clay these soils resulting in very fine wines with subtle bouquet.
Suggested food and wine pairing: This red Bordeaux wine pairs really well with roast lamb and most red meats.

Château Haut-Pougnan

Here at Old Chapel Cellars we import directly from the family run business of Château Haut Pougnan. Situated in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, meaning between two tides, you will find Château Haut Pougnan to the right of River Garonne.

The estate is currently run by Jean Bernard, whose family has been involved since the first harvest in 1852, when only two barrels were produced without modern amenities like electricity, water, or tractors. Electricity was not introduced until 1934. The vineyard, which started with just one hectare, has since grown to 40 hectares—27 hectares dedicated to red grape varieties and 13 to white.

This area is surrounded by beautiful calcareous and clay-limestone/gravelly soils. It is the clay-limestone nature of these soils which makes it possible to obtain very fine wines with such subtle aromas.

Each year her produces a red and white, both consistently good. The white, mostly Sauvignon is clean and mineral with grassy and citrus notes. The merlot dominant red is has a fruity nose with soft tannins, wood spice and hedgerow character.
