Saint Romain is a small appellation that is deserving of more attention. The Saint Romain Rouge is produced from 1 hectare on calcareous clay soil. The Pinot Noir is fermented in vat with indigenous yeasts and pressing is done partially by foot. The wine is matured in barrels, 20% of which are new, for 15 months.
Based in the Hautes Côtes, Billard have 28 hectares covering areas such as St. Romaine, Auxey, Beaune and of course HCDB red and white. The wines are clean and precise with lovely pure fruit and good minerality making them easy to drink young but also suitable for mid-term aging. They plough their Hautes Côtes vineyards using their own horse.
2018 was a hot vintage, beaten only in recent times by the 2003s. However, many domaines have since learnt how to manage hot vintages and have been able to make ripe but well balanced wines. On the whole the Pinots are full, voluptuous and incredibly easy to drink. Maybe not wines to lay down for extended ageing but although they are tasting very well now the Domaines who managed their acidities have produced wines which will also age well in the medium term.
