Product Information

Vinha do Mouro Tinto 2008, Alentejo

Jamie says: "This is a really good modern interpretation of Alentejo.  Lots of rich fruit and that slightly baked fruit character but with a feeling of terroir.  It has a rich slate/mineral streak running through it from the schistous soil upon which the vines grow.   The grapes in this are a mix of traditional Portuguese varieties and more well-know international varietals.  Alentejo is great at producing new/old world hybrids - with great up-front new world fruit but not lacking in the minerality & freshness that you would expect from the old world."

Alentejo Overview: Southern Portugal’s Alentejo region is big. Geo-politically, it is Portugal’s largest region, covering 1/3 of the country’s landmass, but it houses just 4% of the population. Cork is one of the most important products from Alentejo and the vine has been here for centuries.

On a macro-scale, Alentejo’s vineyards are increasing at a faster rate than anywhere else in Europe - from 10,000 ha to 22,000 ha in the last decade. The reason is simple – wines from Alentejo have become the most popular wines in Portugal itself, and supply has expanded to meet demand.

The red wines from Alentejo are easy-drinking and generous and are a good place to get acquainted with Portuguese wines if you are not already familiar with them.  In Alentejo there is a greater use of “international varietals” compared with many Portuguese regions so this can also help the uninitiated palate!
