RED WINE

Red wine isn't always actually red!  Red wine can vary in colour from a rather pink colour, such as a Bouzy Rouge, to almost black, such as a Cahors or Madiran.  The actual colour that a particular red wine has is dependent upon many variables.  Factors are the varietal(s) the red wine is made from, characteristics of that particular vintage, the condition of the grapes , the wine-making methods and the way and time it has been aged.  As a rule of thumb a red wine will get paler (more tawny) as it gets older.

Red wines are produced throughout the vinous world, although they tend to be less suited to the cooler extremes of the wine growing world.  A good example of this is that here in the UK we produce some excellent Sparkling wines (more suitable for less ripe grapes) and good quality white wines but are red wines are not able to compete with the rest of the world.
